Hand-painted signs. Love ’em. Here’s one. I spotted this at the sports field in little Tilting, on Fogo Island, Newfoundland.
Tilting is a very interesting community beautifully documented by architect Robert Mellin in his book Tilting: House Launching, Slide Hauling, Potato Trenching and Other Tales from a Newfoundland Fishing Village (Princeton Architectural Press).

This is a vintage suit consisting of three pieces - a jacket with matching pants and hood hat. This was an official Ski Doo outfit and has a Ski Doo label that reads “Ski Doo Fashions By Ski-Doo Sports Ltd Made in Canada Trade Marks of Bombardier Ltd”. The suit is made in purple with red and white detailing. The jacket does up the front diagonally with a zipper and snaps at the neckline. All three pieces are lined in a red felted wool. This is a fabulous piece of Canadian history - the Ski Doo was voted one of the most innovative Canadian inventions and launched a great sports vehicle and aircraft manufacturer. What can be more Canadian than winter sports wear?

Colour Fade Dishes

For the Culture Days 2020, participants were invited to watch the Pflag Halton + Arts Milton mural being painted onsite by artist JR Marr. The mural contributes to the beautification of Downtown Milton and offers a message of pride, inclusivity, and diversity – values central to Pflag and the work they do as an LGBTQ2S support organization. According to Marr, “In much of my work I am drawn to colour, but the colours in this work are representative of pride.” Passersby are encouraged to take a photo of themselves with the work and use the hashtag #MiltonForAll.

Christian Frederiksen is a Georgian artist born in 1989 who lives and works in Calgary, Canada. He loves to experiment with new ways of creating imagery by collaborating with digital intelligence, exploring both digital and analog techniques, and delving into the unfamiliar subject matter. He often paints landscapes and studies the human form.&nbsp;He studied illustration at Alberta University of the Arts, formerly Alberta College of Art and Design where he earned his BDes. He has also worked in illustration and published comics. Christian's latest project, "Take Me Home", found him traveling around Azerbaijan and collaborating with artists there to create a group exhibition.

I laughed when I found this…the idea of government inspired materials being produced to help beginners collect mushrooms, seems odd to say the least. The activity and content aside, this cover’s use of trippy text, organic colours and album art graphics reek of early seventies.
The habit of most federal government design is typically stiff and grid like (which I love) but some departments, who commissioned work that was outside the canon, avoided this. The more digging around I do, it seems that the agriculture department led the revolt in not using the Swiss rulebook. There are some great off the wall work that came from here and I will try to dig up some other great examples.

What other place in Canada could produce such a sign? I found these signs posted in most parks in Vancouver and surrounding area, warning against the eating of mushrooms (all kinds). I thought that it was funny for a few reasons, but mostly that it is a caution rather than a strict forebidding. The group I was with wanted to steal them and transplant them to High Park and other green spots in Toronto for a gag. Dope, mushrooms and fleece, what a fantasy land, remind me again why we live in Toronto!

The Tim Biebs capsule may very well be an effort to inject Tim Hortons into the hearts of America (the pieces are only available in the American stores). A logo mashing up the two names appears on beanies, fanny packs, and tote bags all priced at $30 a piece, a second wave of food products including coffee and timbits. From a design perspective, the goods are all fine and well — but the question remains, who is this all for? Raw and razor thin marketing.

The shoe is stitched together with multiple pieces of latex rubber cast out of molds made from my own skin. The shoe’s toe and heel raise and lower as it occasionally vibrates/pulsates, and twitches on the floor as if it were still alive. The movement is not constant, and usually causes people to jump back while they are in the middle of leaning in for a closer look.In our modern world of fast and easy consumption, we rarely pay any thought to where products actually come from and how they were produced. Many times we assume mass produced items were simply built by a series of machines. Unfortunately the reality is that we usually exploit other humans to produce goods as cheaply as possible. We place our well-being over that of others, sometimes for trivial objects.As this piece deals with issues of sweatshop labor and content ownership, each piece of “skin” (cast in latex from my own) is different in color, size, and texture. The Nike Logo is done in white and placed prominently on top. The shoe’s toe and heel raise and lower as it occasionally vibrates/pulsates, and twitches on the floor as if it were still alive.While the shoe is disturbing, the reality behind the issue is even more so.&nbsp; We live in a culture that is disconnected from what it is doing to itself and others. We choose to ignore it, rather than deal with the reality we have created for ourselves.
