! Winnipeg’s Exchange District once housed rows upon rows of workers sitting at sewing machines for a booming garment industry. It is now a National Historic Site that spans twenty city blocks and consists of 150 heritage buildings. Many of the buildings have remnants of that history painted on their sides. I love to see the hand painted type faded from hot summers and cold winters. The area is now home to many creative businesses (partly due to the cheap rent) and I know we are still sweeping up straight pins that have been stuck between the floor boards since the early 1900’s. – Karla Burr, MGDC
