Designer Marian Bantjes was recently commissioned by Wallpaper* to design a limited edition $15,000 Laser Sailboat for the magazines Handmade Issue. Inspired by the dazzle graphics of World War 2 battle ships of, the boat is such a refreshing design departure, and proof that adding design to tired brands can reinvigorate.

Marian, thanks for all the ongoing killer design work. Canada creative is better for it. Love this work and glad that Wallpaper had the smarts to bring you in on the mix.

What a stunner, amazing that the dazzle has not come out before, seems like a no brainer. The only wrinkle is that is has a military function and that is not really taken in as part of the design. Graphically interesting, but I wonder if we would all be so smitten if the boat was camo.

Military function wasn’t part of the brief—it doesn’t need to come out here.
Also, the “dazzle camo” usually wasn’t…camo. I’ve seen black and white, black white gray, and some with the odd bit of blue/yellow thrown in (that I’m not sure is accurate to the original intention). In most respects—certainly all relevant respects—Marian’s interpretation of the style is spot-on.
