Created to celebrate the friendship between Holland and Canada and to mark the tulips from Holland that bloom in Ottawa, the home of the world’s largest tulip festival. In 1945-46, Holland presented over 100,000 prized tulip bulbs to Canada in thanks for Canada’s efforts in liberating Holland during the Second World War. This is the first coin to feature a glass relief. The Royal Canadian Mint leads the world with its proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin.
