Instantly recognizable to any Torontonian, the typeface used throughout the TTC is a clean, crisp, grotesque internally referred to as ‘Station font’ – but this isn’t it. The original Station font was designed in 1954 and, to date, no one within the TTC has been able to pinpoint the designer or even locate the original outlines. This has led to a hodge podge of not-quite-right typefaces being substituted for more recent TTC signage (including Gill Sans and Helvetica). Toronto Subway Font by David Vereschagin is one of the closest matches available, as Vereschagin spent weeks recreating the original using rubbings, sketches and extensive photo-documentation. Though it may seem strange to add what is essentially a knock-off to the Resource, the great lengths the designer has gone to in creating Toronto Subway is a testament to the original’s iconic nature and the passion we all (or at least those of us in Toronto) share for an already lost relic of the city’s recent past.
