Kolor, in collaboration with Spreed Inc, have designed and developed an official Globe and Mail iPhone application. Kolor set out to create an application with strong visual ties to the Globe and Mail brand by utilizing complementary typefaces and colour schemes, while Spreed provided the underlying news reading functionality. The Spreed news reader is the result of years of research into digital reading enhancement, and uses a unique interface to create a cinematic reading experience which also results in a marked increase to the speed at which people scan through news stories. The Globe and Mail (as well as Kolor) should be commended for their efforts to break the mold of standard iPhone news apps. It would have been easy for the Globe and Mail to deploy another anonymous scrape-and-scan application — but the final product’s crisp interface and unique reading functions make for an innovative and enjoyable mobile news experience.
