The Royal United Services Institute of Vancouver (RUSI) and the City of Vancouver initiated a program to place the Legion Poppy on every street sign in Vancouver that is named after a Canadian Military Battle or person. New street signs have been installed on the streets surrounding Victory Square in downtown Vancouver bearing the image of the familiar Royal Canadian Legion poppy, immortalized by the World War One poem “In Flanders Fields,” by Lt. Col. John McCrae. The poppy has become the sign of remembrance in Canada and around the world. Vancouver is one of the few cities in Canada to have such a recognition program. This is another example of the support the City of Vancouver provides to heritage-minded groups like RUSI and the Legion. Victory Square is the site of Vancouver’s iconic Cenotaph, around which the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony takes place on November 11.
