A smart remix, taking style cues from two of the best “designer” chairs, Grcic’s Chair One and Stark’s Ghost Chair, the Poly (as in polycarbonate) features a modern, angular aesthetic similar to the Spirit House Chair by Libeskind. Attractive, and entirely functional, Poly is more than a pretty face, earning a CATAS certification, is true contract furniture, can be stacked, used outside, and comes in a range of usable colours. This product is an unusual departure for Rashid, who has been favouring the lighter concepts of “sensual minimalism” and “blobject” for over a decade. With a mountain of experience behind him, the designer seems to be maturing, tapping a deeper design palette and reaching out beyond his safety net of karimglyphics (infinity, cross, asterisk, and grid) to a connected, and contemporary place. If it was not for the Poly coming in fluorescent pink, a viewer may not even recognize this work as a Karim Rashid.
