This is one of those iconic design pieces, produced by a manufacturing legend, famous for breaking the “form follows function” ideology that held design in the tightest of grips (and still does) since Louis Sullivan uttered it decades ago. This kettle blows this formula completely, offering to shape a kettle into a decoration of walnut fish leaping out of a chromed blunt arrow shape. I am unclear what this has to do with the culture of tea making, or the usefulness of a kitchen device but the result is quite beautiful and abstract. I will not be the one who pans the “good design” of the world but clearly i am struggling to understand how/why this work has reached such staggering heights of celebrity and good taste. I guess design is like people, in a world full of ugliness, it is the cutest ones that get all the attention.
