An early conceptual hit of the green movement, this small device was designed to help people understand how they use the objects around them. Easily stuck to a product, this small pill shaped monitor records and displays (similar to a pedometer) how many times a product has been used. The hope is to increase the bond between the user and the object, while providing a comment on the product life span and durability of the things we use. Consumers will question whether they need to replace one item with a newer version, or whether they really need that item at all.

This could also help cultivate a more “mindful” consumer. One who is more aware and in the moment, and whose values are aligned with their behaviour. So often we are lured into unconsciousness by the devices and objects around us that we are disconnected from the artificial desires fed to us by companies peddling their wares. We don’t need more stuff and it seems the idea behind this device is perhaps one way design can help us realize that.

Too bad it was only a concept. The projects heart is in the right place though.

I saw this at the design conference in Monterey a few years ago. Adbusters was using it in their presentation to talk about what positive influence product design could have. Sadly, nothing has changed, and product design is still focused on making glossy junk.
