This unusual stretch of pavement plays “musical shadows” when people dancing on it. Designed by Montreal-based ‘Daily Tous Les Jours Studio,’ the ‘Mesa Musical Shadows’ project encourages social interaction and persuades people to come out of their shells. The sidewalk is able to sense when people are dancing or moving sporadically based on the movement of their shadows and plays a note when this happens. When several people move and dance together, the installation plays a “harmonious soundscape” that is entirely controlled by the users’ interactions with each other and with the sidewalk. The musical shadows installation starts the day playing “funky acapella beats” and as it grows darker the sidewalk progresses to playing eerie forest noises.
