Long overdue in the Resource, the Maun Windsor chair has become the iconic design of Patty Johnson’s successful North South Project – a new model of viable design and craft collaborations in the developing world. Like every North South collaboration, the design and manufacture of the Maun Windsor aims to be ‘ecologically, economically, culturally and aesthetically sustainable for the long-term benefit of each participating community, producer and craftsperson’. Utilizing carefully harvested wood and eco finishes, the chair combines the aesthetics of African sculpture with the familiar form of a ‘low back’ Windsor chair – achieving a look that’s both classic and original (aesthetically sustainable might be an understatement). The Maun Windsor, was recently picked up by retailer Design Within Reach (who have now expanded into Canada) and the Mabeo Furniture collection just earned an ICFF Editor’s Award for best craftsmanship.
