This rolling wheel bascule design was chosen to replace Victoria’s aging Johnson Street Bridge. With its dedicated pedestrian bridge, multipurpose trail and ‘untangled’ roadways, the bridge addresses many of the functional concerns highlighted by residents. Aesthetically, the bridge swaps the humble utility of the current bridge for an all too generic flashiness. Not that the bridge is without potential. The open mechanism (which pedestrians on the western shore will pass through) is a bold detail that frankly, doesn’t need to try so hard – if the existing bridge can’t be preserved, perhaps something of it’s honest character could remain.
