A beautiful and thought provoking example of upcycling that tackles issues of waste, value, industry, the environment, place and beauty, and ultimately lets you make up your own mind. Energy Bracelet is made from worn production tubing from Alberta’s oil and gas wells. The pipes are sliced and machined for use as jewelry, but the exterior, which is worn from contact with the Earth is left unfinished. Thus, the process of oil and gas production actually generates the individual beauty of each piece (the batch shown here, with green oxidization is particularly nice). Forging an even closer connection to place and the narrative of the material, each bracelet is sold with the coordinates of the source well. Using Google Earth, wearers can view the precise location where their piece was etched by the land, and witness how human industry has etched the land itself.
