Buckminster Fuller’s Biosphere has been an iconic part of the Montreal skyline since its construction in 1967 as the US Pavilion for the World Fair. While the acrylic dome of the 20-storey high microclimate was destroyed by a 1976 fire, by 1995 it was repurposed (thanks to a renovation lead by Montreal-architect Eric Gauthier) as the Biosphere Environment Museum. Now, 50 years later, Studio Dror has designed a concept for a second dome to reside alongside the Biosphere on Île Sainte-Hélène. In line with Fuller’s vision of a synergistic relationship between nature and technology, the new dome would be enshrouded in an aluminum skeleton, populated with vegetation, allowing it to provide not only a backdrop but acoustic buffer for the festivals, concerts, and fairs the island hosts. Studio Dror envisions the two structures “interacting much like the sun and the moon, the Biosphere is no longer alone; it has a partner.” All renderings courtesy Studio Dror.
