This early iteration of a trackball input device was developed as part of the DATAR project by Ferranti engineers to acquire, process, transmit, and display data for the Canadian Navy. The device used a standard five-pin bowling ball to allow coordinates to be input into computer terminals on various ships. The system was successfully tested on Lake Ontario in 1953, but the project was discontinued due to inadequate funding. Nonetheless, the innovations developed have had lasting impact.
