1. What the hell is Coast-Salish, if anything? 1. Isn’t the Coca-Cola rub very, very, tiresomely (yawn), pardon me, clichéd by now? 1. Have you received the Legal Dept. letter from Atlanta yet?

1. It is the traditional territory of the Coast Salish First People. Where Vancouver, BC, is located. This thing called “Google” is wonderful for finding out information. 1. It’s not a commentary on Coke, its a comment on the culture of consumerism and how objects of pop-culture have become individual and cultural totemic representation. It was also created to pay respect to the Coast Salish peoples, whose traditional territory stretches well into Washington state as well. Apparently it’s not cliche because it has made people think of how we perceive pop imagery and how it effects our daily lives. That, and it resides in two major public collections in Canada and the US, as well as private collections in both countries. 1. Nope. Again, it isn’t about Coke, I’m not marketing a drink. Companies like Coke have marketed to my generation (and those that follow) through the pinnacle of modern pop-cultre (the early-mid 80’s). Bombarded me/us/you with adverts in all forms of media that we can not escape. The imagery of Coke (as well as many other pop-products) have been forces fed to us on a daily basis. How can we not accept these images as part of our collective cultural identity? Disney, Marvel, Coke, Pepsi to name but a few, are all recognizable symbols of our collective, totemic representation through modern pop-culture. We have been bombarded by this pop-imagery and we are able to recognize they imagery they fed us as their brand, thus our totems. So in the 3 years since this was made, no letters from Coke. It’s art, not a product, so I’m not worried. Thanks again for the shout out CDR! The piece was created in 2006 for my 1st Solo exhibit, “Sonny Assu: As Defined by the Indian Act” along with the cereal boxes. It is of an edition of 5 + 3 artist proofs

Hi there, Could I use this image in a non-commercial survey on traditional marine resources used by the coast salish? I wanted something neat for the thank you page. Cheers, Beth
