These bricks, which were manufactured for use in school curriculum, demonstrate what is ideal in a child’s toy. They are ambiguous yet allude to the real and lead to open ended play. In scale they are about the size of a
real building block and because of their egg crate construction have durability. The silk screened graphics of smaller bricks makes this an enigmatic object and then the bricks in number used for building anything one can imagine further creates the opportunity for imaginative play.
The design and manufacture is both efficient and cheap – die cut cardboard and rudimentary silk screen – makes this product even more admirable. Democratic and widely available it deserves to be celebrated.
