Two thousand units of this design were produced for the XXIth Olympic Games by Montreal Industrial Designer- Michel Dallaire. Its simple lines recall antiquity and the resinous wooden torchs in Greece. Fueled by super-activated olive oil (olive oil, nitropropane, and heptane contained in a hydrophollic cotton cartridge) the torches’ fuel was perfected with the assistance of the Department of Chemistry at the L’École Polytechnique de Montréal. -Greg Ball

Michel Dallaire was awarded the Order of Canada a few years ago! He has done tons of great work… if anyone has pictures please send them our way (the work he did for Air Canada is particularly interesting).

Most recently he’s done all the street fixtures in the renovated Quartier International section of Old Montreal, and stuff for the new Bibliotheque Nationale as well.

My father’s company manufactured the 1976 Olympic torch for Canada. For completeness, and in honour of his upcoming 90th birthday, would you consider completing the “manufacturer” section which remains blank?
The company is “The Queensway Machine Products Ltd”. It has been manufacturing aircraft parts for de Havilland and Boeing (formerly MacDonald Douglas) since 1951 and is located in Etobicoke (Toronto), Ontario.
My father was thrilled to contribute his knowledge and skill as the torch had proved to be a challenge for others to produce.
It would be my pleasure to provide further details should they be required.
